Motherhood changes everything....
Your body, your routines, your priorities—and sometimes, quietly, your sense of identity. Somewhere between late-night feedings, endless to-do lists, and caring for everyone else, it’s easy to feel like the version of you that existed before motherhood has faded into the background.
But here’s the truth that doesn’t get said enough:
You are still you.
Not a lesser version. Not a lost version. Just an evolving one.
The Identity Shift No One Fully Prepares You For
Becoming a mother is one of the most transformative experiences a woman can go through. It’s beautiful, overwhelming, empowering—and at times, disorienting.
In those early days (and honestly, even years), you may find yourself wondering:
- Who am I outside of being “mom”?
- Why don’t I feel like myself anymore?
- Will I ever get that version of me back?
If you’ve had those thoughts, you’re not alone.
So many mothers here in Hampton Roads, Virginia share this same quiet struggle—one that often goes unseen but deeply felt.
You Didn’t Lose Yourself—You Expanded
There’s a common narrative that motherhood means “losing yourself.” But what if that’s not actually true?
What if instead…
you’ve expanded?
You’ve gained:
- Strength you didn’t know you had
- Patience that stretches further than you imagined
- A deeper capacity for love and connection
The woman you were before motherhood still exists. She’s just layered now with new depth, new perspective, and new purpose.
Finding Yourself in the Everyday Moments
Finding yourself again doesn’t have to mean dramatic change or big, life-altering decisions.
Sometimes it looks like:
- Letting yourself be in the photos, even when you don’t feel “ready”
- Wearing something that makes you feel like you again
- Slowing down long enough to notice the beauty in your current season
- Giving yourself permission to exist beyond the roles you carry
Motherhood isn’t about erasing who you were—it’s about integrating her into who you’re becoming.
Why It’s So Important to See Yourself Again
One of the most powerful things you can do in motherhood is to see yourself—not just as the one behind the scenes, but as part of the story.
This is something I witness often as a Hampton Roads motherhood photographer. So many moms come into sessions saying things like:
“I just want a few photos with my kids… I’m always the one taking them.”
And what they don’t realize is how deeply meaningful that decision is.
Because when you step into the frame:
- You reclaim your presence
- You validate your role in your family’s story
- You create tangible proof that you were here, loving them in all these small, fleeting moments
Documenting This Version of You Matters
There will come a day when your children look back at photos of their childhood. They won’t be looking for perfection.
They’ll be looking for you.
The way you held them.
The way you looked at them.
The way you showed up, even on the hard days.
As a Virginia motherhood and newborn photographer, my goal isn’t just to capture beautiful images—it’s to help you see yourself the way your children already do.
Present. Loving. Enough.
A Gentle Reminder for This Season
If you’ve been feeling lost in motherhood, this is your reminder:
You are still in there.
You are still whole.
You are still worthy of being seen and remembered.
And maybe, just maybe… this version of you is even more powerful than the one before.
